The short answer

Income requirements for the Hungary White Card

The only route on this site measured after tax.

At least €3,000 net a month, in each of the six months before you enter Hungary, and for the whole of your stay. Net means after tax, so a gross salary of the same number falls short. The figure is in Government Decree 35/2024, article 52. The White Card factsheet from the Immigration Directorate.

OIF asks for six months of bank statements and an employer or tax authority certificate of regular income. The Embassy in Islamabad asks for the six months before your interview. Those two windows are not the same, so we build the file to cover both.

Originals, in English. The Embassy accepts only original documents and asks for NADRA documents and your CV in English. Neither OIF's factsheet nor the checklist states an apostille or translation rule for the White Card. That silence is not an exemption, so we confirm it with the Embassy before you submit.

What happens after the White Card is approved?

You have three months to enter. The visa is single entry, valid for three months, for a stay of up to 30 days, and the approval lapses if you do not travel in time. Your photo and fingerprints are taken when you apply. To extend, file between 90 and 30 days before expiry, after at least 90 days in Hungary in any 180-day period.

Filing from Pakistan: the application goes to the Embassy of Hungary in Islamabad, with the appointment booked through VFS Global, no earlier than 90 days before you plan to enter. OIF decides within 30 days. The rule itself is in Decree 35/2024.

From experience

Why do strong applications still get questioned?

Usually because the file was built for a gross threshold.

01

Gross pay presented as net

A contract salary above the line, and take-home pay below it. Hungary reads what reaches you after tax, not what the offer letter says.

How we handle itWe check the net credit in each month's statement before we check the contract.

02

One short month

The decree asks for the figure in the six months before entry, then throughout the stay. A quiet month in that window is a gap, whatever the average.

How we handle itWe map six months against both the entry date and the interview date, and move the filing if one falls short.

03

An employer letter with no remote clause

The decree wants the employer to state that the work can be done remotely and for how long. A plain salary certificate says neither.

How we handle itWe draft the points the statement must cover and check the signed version before filing.

04

A plan that needs a second permit

Some applicants expect to bring family or switch to work later. Neither is possible on this card, and finding out after arrival costs a year.

How we handle itWe test the whole plan in the first review and point you to a better route when Hungary does not fit.

Questions

Hungary White Card FAQs

What is the income requirement for the Hungary White Card in 2026?

At least €3,000 net a month, for at least six months before you enter Hungary, and for the whole time you stay. The figure is set in Government Decree 35/2024 and has stood since 2 March 2024.

What does net mean here?

After tax and deductions. A salary of €3,000 gross does not meet it. Every other route on our site measures gross income, so Hungary's figure is a higher bar than it looks beside them.

Who qualifies?

An employee of an employer outside Hungary whose contract allows remote, electronic work, or someone who owns or runs a business registered outside Hungary. The decree does not name freelancers; a registered business abroad is the closest fit.

Can my spouse and children come with me?

No. OIF states that a family member of a White Card holder or applicant cannot get a residence permit for family reunification. The one exception it gives is a child born while the permit is valid.

How long does the White Card last?

Up to one year, and it can be extended once, for up to one more year, for the same purpose. To extend, you must have spent at least 90 days in Hungary in any 180-day period, and file between 90 and 30 days before expiry.

Can it lead to another permit or permanent residence?

No. OIF says a White Card holder cannot get a national residence card, and cannot apply for a permit on any other ground from inside Hungary, either while the card is valid or after it expires.

Where do I apply from Pakistan?

At the Embassy of Hungary in Islamabad, with the appointment booked through VFS Global. Only visa-free nationals may apply from inside Hungary. The Embassy lists employment permits for Pakistanis as on hold, but it names the White Card among the cases it accepts.

How long does the decision take?

OIF says it decides within 30 days of the application. Lodge it no earlier than 90 days before you plan to enter. Once approved, you must enter within three months or the approval lapses.

Can I work for Hungarian clients?

No. The White Card is only for people who pursue no gainful activity in Hungary and hold no share in a Hungarian company. OIF withdraws the permit if you work for or on behalf of an employer in Hungary.

How much does it cost?

€110 at the Embassy, which covers both the residence permit and the visa to collect it. There is no separate visa application. An extension inside Hungary has its own fee in forint. Our fee is separate.

Will I pay tax in Hungary?

We found no statement from the Hungarian tax authority on White Card holders, so this page does not give one. Tax residence follows its own rules. Speak to a Hungarian adviser before you plan around it.

Rules on this page come from the Immigration Directorate's factsheet, last edited 11 March 2026, and the Embassy in Islamabad. We do not give tax advice.
